The Heiress

"Carruthers, why did you not tell Miss Ironfoot of her danger?" inquired Holmes sternly.
"Because then she would have left me, and I couldn't bear to face that. I was firmly resolved that she was to marry my friend Woodley."
"I see. But was not the original arrangement that the one of you two who could win the heart of this incredibly rich heiress, the sole child of Dáin Ironfoot of Lonely Mountain Mining Company, was to enter into matrimony with her and then share her fortune with the other?"
"That was indeed the plan, Mr Holmes. But when I met Daisy Ironfoot face to face I changed my mind."
"Oh?" said Holmes with lifted eyebrows and a slight smile on his lips." And why was that, Carruthers?"
"Land's sake, Mr Holmes! You have seen her with your own eyes. I had no idea that all Dwarf women have beards.  I thought it made sense for Woodley, who is ugly as sin himself, to sacrifice herself for the both of us and marry her."
