SYMBIOTIC REPRESSION CAUSES AN EXISTENTIAL PSYCHOSIS
by
Dr. A. S. Tollmann
J. R. R. Tolkien, a victim of multiple neuroses, hypostasized these pathologies in The Lord of the Rings. "Lord" symbolizes the tyranny of Tolkien's father; "Ring" also symbolizes tyranny, in that the Ring is a symbol of marriage, and marriage is utter oppression based upon sexual repression.
The hobbits symbolize Tolkien's idea of what childhood could be like if it weren't for Those Tyrants, commonly called "parents." Frodo is the Ego; Sam the Id; Merry the Superego; and Pippin the Superid.
Gandalf represents the psychic sexuality of confabulation that actualizes the particular instances of leukaemia. Hence his leading role in Tolkien's psychical phenomenalization.
The Old Forest obviously represents Tolkien's repressed desire for antidisestablishmentarianism. Tom Bombadil is a distortion of multiple sclerosis; Goldberry, of multiple orgasms. Keeping this in mind, the symbolism of the Barrow Wights assumes a lucid clarity.
The Black Riders are the tormenting moral impulses that utterly destroy all freedom and humanity. Bree, on the other hand, exemplifies a supercalifragilistic-expialidocious tribulation of repressed botany.
Aragorn (note the appellation "Strider") is the Subego. He is the victim of total sexual repression, and therefore accosts the hobbits in order to stipulate his diagnosis.
Rivendell is the revandalized allegory of the womb, just as Elrond represents transparently the elronditis of oscillation. And now a host of new symbols present themselves to my pitiless analysis.
Boromir (who succumbs to the lure of the Ring -- which, as we saw, symbolizes the utter tyranny of marriage) enacts conformity to traditional mores (which are, of course, inherently contemptible). Legolas represents the immaculate confabulation of neurosis, while Gimli, on the other hand, represents the immaculate confabulation of psychosis.
The Orcs, Trolls, etc. represents all those restrictions upon individual autonomy that are not imposed by members of the Tollmann school, while the Riders of Rohan symbolize rohanosis, or freedom from multiple restrictions with partial dependence upon sexual repression.
Gollum is a direct reference to J. D. Golen, my patient in the Gollum case, who was almost converted to true self-actualization in a repressionless environment, but unfortunately converted instead to the bleak oppression of Christianity.
Gondor symbolizes the odoriferous processes of psychical integration, in contrast to Mordor (an obvious reference to Tolkien’s mother).
The triumph represents in part Tolkien's psyche's desire for liberation from all restrictions, and partly the catastrophic wavelength of pollution, which actualizes the Monrovian franchise of hypnosis.
Of course, Tolkien was not in the least aware of his work's significance on a conscious level, but his subconscious mind was, and we have studied his psyche to the point that we perfectly comprehend his psychical processes. Indeed, only those specially trained in the Tollmannian school can fully grasp the psychic production of the story. This, then, is the long-awaited definitive assessment of the Lord of the Rings, which my research alone has made possible.
